1981–1990
Mick spent his early years playing and learning at home. His parents, both school teachers, did not begin formal lessons or use a curriculum. He directed his own learning while they offered support when asked.
1990–1993
He spent four years in Australian elementary school and did well academically, socially and in sport.
1994–1999
By high school he had become increasingly frustrated with the time spent on subjects that felt disconnected from his interests, and he asked to return to homeschooling.
2015–2023
Teaching English as a second language to young learners in Turkey, then working as a private tutor, deepened his appreciation of self-directed learning and prompted him to write down the ideas that became Home Time.
2024–Present
Mick’s work has also included remedial massage, movement and martial arts. MickHolmes.com remains the home of his homeschooling writing and the forthcoming Home Time.
